Back in 1990-Something I was lucky enough to stumb

Back in 1990-Something I was lucky enough to stumble upon a Latin house masterpiece produced by none other than the legendary Tito Puente’s son, @titopuentejr . His rendition of the mega-hit “Oye Como Va” (one of Latin Jazz’s most important songs) was an instant addition to my live club sets and radio shows. The original tune, a bestseller from “El Rey del Timbal” (The King of the Timbales) and the #1 selling Latin jazz artist in history, was covered by a long list of big names like Santana, Celia Cruz, Julio Iglesias, Los Lobos, and more!

Tito Jr’s Latin house version hit so hard and so fast that I immediately took it to @carmyferreri my Program Director at @991kggi . Looking at me with those skeptical yet trusting eyes, Carmy put it in rotation that day, and we both watched it turn into one of the biggest testing records of the time. That move created a storm of adds across the country, making the song a top 10 dance hit and paving the way for other Latin house records to get rotation at our station and hundreds of others. (People really don’t realize how many underground records we turned into national hits on @earthquakemix !)

I am so stoked to see @titopuentejr and his orchestra carrying on the legacy and the sound tonight in the town I grew up in! (Also very happy to see Latin Jazz and the Latin sound doing better than ever in the United States!)

Cheers to @titopuentejr , to all the Latin house artists I’ve worked with over the years, to househeads and dance music lovers, and to everyone who witnessed and participated in one of the greatest eras in music—the underground ‘90s! TONIGHT WE MAMBO!
